Just 10 months earlier, the naval frigate INS Vindhyagiri collided with a merchant tanker in Mumbai harbour sank. It was the fourth time a warship was completely written off in 23 years. Since 1990, the Indian Navy has lost one warship in peacetime every five years. Since 2004, it has lost one naval combatant every two years. Few global navies have such a dubious record. Five days after the August 14 explosion destroyed INS Sindhurakshak, killing 18 crew members, Defence Minister A.K. Antony told Rajya Sabha that “preliminary probe indicated the blast was due to possible ignition of armament”. Armed with torpedoes and missiles, the submarine was fully fuelled and ready to sail for patrol early next morning.

Major’s widow approaches HC for his body

Jalandhar resident Sarabjeet Kaur’s husband Major GS Cheema was posted on the Siachen glacier in 2011. As per the army’s version, a fire broke out at the Ashoka post around 7:30pm on July 20, 2011, due to thunderstorm and lightning. The army told Kaur that Major Cheema died on the spot due to severe burns, along with another officer, Lt Archit. Kaur claims that the medical examination report reveals that Major Cheema died at 11:30am on July 21.

She told the court that even after two years, the body had not been given to her. She prayed before the court that the mortal remains of her husband be handed over to her for performing the last rites.

The docks continue to be infiltrated by elements from the underworld who were earlier led by one Mohammed Ali, but are now being controlled by one Arifbhai. Ali and Arifbhai belong to the Dawood Ibrahim gang. In fact, this gang has managed to infiltrate even the naval intelligence wing and has some moles there.

The gang’s main business is smuggling of diesel. Large ships bring in diesel from Somalia and park themselves in the international waters. Hi-speed barges owned by the gang then bring in the precious fuel from these ships. The turnover of the smugglers runs into several crores of rupees each month.

Army and Navy accused of landgrab in Goa

Goa’s politicians across the spectrum have charged the Indian Army and the Indian Navy with grabbing government land but the forces deny accusations of wrongdoing. The latest salvo was fired at the Indian Army by Panaji Mayor Surendra Furtado, who accused the 2 Signal Training Centre (STC) of occupying 1.44 acres of prime land in the heart of the state capital.

Army housing scam worth Rs 25k crore exposed

The defence ministry has cancelled 14 contracts awarded to private builders after smelling a scam in the Indian Army’s ambitious Rs25,000 crore housing project for married officers and other ranks. The ministry cited “delay” and “non-performance” as reasons for the cancellation of contracts, and accused the project directorate of “abdicating” its responsibilities and “allowing private players to benefit”.

In a stinging internal communication to defence secretary RK Mathur recently, minister of state for defence Jitender Singh said: “It is unfortunate that non-performance of private parties is being tolerated and they are being allowed to benefit while armed forces personnel are suffering due to lack of accommodation.”

Prison term of Lt General commuted to dissmissal

Giving some respite to former director general (supplies and transport) of the Army, Lt Gen S K Sahni, who was convicted by court martial in a ration scam and cashiered from service, the Chandigarh bench of Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) converted his three years rigorous imprisonment into dismissal from service. The tribunal, however, upheld his conviction in the scam.

With these orders, Sahni will not face the dishonorable dismissal – where the ranks and all regimental insignia are stripped off. But he would lose all service benefits as an ex-soldier. He may, however, get these benefits with the sanction of Union government by filing a plea.

2 army officers injured in fight with own unit jawans

In yet another incident involving a clash between soldiers and officers of an army unit, a physical fight broke out at the 10 Sikh Light Infantry battalion last night, leaving three injured, including a Lt Col who was second in command.

It is still not clear what triggered the fight but sources said that the clash took place yesterday and several personnel needed medical treatment, with a few even in hospital.
